How to run Auto SSL on GoDaddy cpanel hosting?

Finally, GoDaddy has introduced a free SSL certificate in few of their shared cpanel linux hosting platform. It is now available for free from Deluxe and above plans in some markets. Earlier, it was only available in “Web hosting plus plans” and “Maximum cpanel hosting plan”.

What is auto SSL on cPanel hosting?

Auto SSL is integrated SSL certificate tool to automatically install an SSL certificate on all domains and sub-domains hosted in cpanel hosting. You can run auto install an SSL certificate and it does not require any technical knowledge. 

Auto SSL is integrated SSL certificate powered by Sertigo SSL provider. If you are paying for additional SSL certificate, you can stop paying for it and go with integrated SSL certificate which is provided in auto SSL. 
SSL certificate provided in auto SSL is valid for 3 months and server install it automatically. If in case, your server has missed auto SSL installation, you can check below steps. 

Steps to run auto SSL on GoDaddy cPanel linux hosting:

  • Open your products page from top right side of godaddy.com
  • Click on “Manage” next to your cpanel hosting plan.

  • Click on “Manage” next to auto SSL to open auto SSL tool

  • Select your domain in search bar and add it to auto SSL. This is to make sure SSL certificate automatically install next time when server run auto SSL 
  • Now, select domain you want to run auto SSL on and click on “Run auto SSL”
  • Wait for auto SSL to complete, it can take upto  2 hours depending on number of websites you have. Once it completes, the page will refresh and next to your domain, it will say “AutoSSL domain validated”.

  • Now, try to open your website and it should open with an SSL certificate. If your website is not redirecting from http to https, check for SSL redirection and if it is missing, you can check this help article to set up this redirection.

    That’s it, you have successfully installed auto SSL on your website 🙂

Why did SSL certificate installation have fail after running auto SSL on GoDaddy cpanel linux hosting?

If in case, your SSL certificate has failed, here are few steps you can follow and re-run SSL installation: 

  1. Make sure your domain is pointing to hosting server IP. 
    Domain should be pointing to the server IP address else auto SSL will not work. You can open your hosting and check your server IP address. Now, open a domain DNS page and check if A record is pointing to the  same IP address. If it is already pointing to the server IP address, let’s move to the next step.
  2. Remove “self signed” SSL certificate from hosting as self signed SSL certificate can halt the SSL installation. You can open cpanel admin > SSL TLS > Manage SSL sites as shown in images below:

Find domain name and delete Self Signed SSL certificate from server.

3. Now, open file manager and find .htaccess and .user.ini files. These are control files and if they are not visible, click on “settings”(1) at top left side and make them visible. In most cases, you will only have a .htaccess file on the server. Now, rename(2) this file to any name like .htaccess-disable(3). You can check below images as well.

Make sure you are disabling these in root of the website. If you have multiple websites and you want to install SSL on all domains, make sure to disable these files in the root of add-on domains as well. 

Now, run auto SSL again on the server and it will complete and install certificate on your websites. Once SSL is installed, rename .htaccess and .user.ini file back again to their original name.

Why is auto SSL stuck in installation on my server?

Usually, auto SSL takes around 30 minutes to complete installation on all websites. If auto SSL is stuck in installation on the “autoSSL in progress” button for more than 30 minutes, it means it is stuck on the parent server. This is very very rare though. However, if it is stuck on your server, you will have to contact GoDaddy support and ask them to stop this process.

Fix GoDaddy Managed wordpress website redirecting to myftpupload.com

 

What is myftpupload.com?

myftpupload.com belong to GoDaddy’s temporary domain for managed Wordpress hosting accounts. 

Reason for this redirection in managed wordpress website?

 It has been observed that sometimes after restoring GoDaddy Managed wordpress website, it start redirecting to temporary domain name myftpupload.com
 
Fortunately, there is very easy fix for this issue. 
 
Reason of this redirection is change in domain name in database tables. This is a technical error at GoDaddy managed wordpress servers and it only happens when a customer requests to restore website from last 30 days.
 

Steps to fix redirection to temporary domain name myftpupload.com

It is very easy to fix this error and you can fix it even if you are not tech saavy. You can follow below instructions:
 
  1.  Open your GoDaddy account and go to “my products” page.
  2. Scroll down to “Managed Wordpress” section and click on “Manage” next to hosting of your website.

3.   Now, click on “settings” at top and you will find your domain name and temporary domain name assigned to your website. Make sure your domain name is set as “PRIMARY” here. If not, click on 3 dots next to your domain name and make your domain name primary.

If your domain name is already primary and website is still redirecting to temporary domain name myftpupload.com then follow below instructions:

1. Open “phpmyadmin” to open database assigned to your website.

This will open phpmyadmin and once you are there, you will see 2 databases on top left side. One would be “information schema” and other one would your database like it is starting with f7 in below image for me.

Once you open database, it will open all tables of your database. Our only concern is “options” table. You can find it and click on “Browse” next to it.

TIP: Use Ctrl + F to find “options” table in case you are not able to find it.

Once you open wp_options table, you have to find siteurl and home. Usually, they are on number 1 and 2 in these tables. Now, you will see that your website siteurl and home is set to temporary domain name which is myftpupload.com. Click on “edit” next to both tables and change URL to your domain name.

Now, wait for 2-3 minutes and try to open your website in a different browser to eliminate browser cache issue. Or use /?nocache=1 at the end of your URL just like this: https://webride.net/?nocache=1 

This should fix this issue and I hope GoDaddy will also fix this issue from their end 🙂

How to install an SSL certificate on cPanel linux hosting at GoDaddy or other providers

Some of us might not know what SSL is, but hackers and spammers do so SSL should be installed on every website whether it is eCommerce website or not. Also, SSL may help you to rank your website up in google results and google also encourages website which have SSL certificate installed in their search results. In this article, I’m going to tell you how to install SSL certificate on any cPanel hosting server.

  2. Connect domain with SSL certificate
  3. Generate CSR
  4. Rekey SSL certificate
  5. Download and install certificate
  6. Check online if SSL is installed
  7. Redirect SSL certificate from http to https

BUY AN SSL CERTIFICATE

If your hosting provider does not provide an SSL certificate with your plan, you need to buy one in order to secure your website. There are many options available in the market to buy SSL certificates from: GoDaddy, ComodoSSL etc. Installation is same for all SSL certificates. 

Connect domain with SSL certificate

Once you have purchased an SSL certificate, connect the domain with the SSL certificate. Now, if you have a hosting server and SSL certificate at the same provider, for example godaddy in this case ( domain should be primary domain at hosting), you can check for SSL installation at sslchecker or whynopadlock websites and if it shows no errors, you can skip steps and move to step number 8 to redirect domain to https

Generate CSR (Certificate signing request)

We need to generate CSR at cpanel hosting. Login to cpanel admin and locate SSL/TLS section and then click on generate CSR. Enter domain name and other information required and generate CSR. Once it is done, you will receive 2 encrypted files: one is CSR and another one is private key. Copy them both on notepad (including —–begin certificate and end certificate—–) as we are going to need them later on.

Rekey SSL certificate

Now, we have to rekey the SSL using CSR we created in the above step. Click on rekey SSL certificate and paste the whole CSR over there ( including —–begin certificate and end certificate—–) Once it is done, you will get a new certificate generated in a few minutes. In case, you get an error that CSR is not valid, you can test your CSR at this website

Download and install certificate

Once a new SSL certificate is generated, we have to download the SSL certificate. Since we are installing a certificate on cPanel, we need to select the “Apache” certificate and download it. It will download 3 files and we have to use the alphanumeric one to upload.

Once you have downloaded it, go to cpanel admin > SSL/TLS again and this time, click on “Generate, view, upload, or delete SSL certificates”. Upload the .crt file here as shown in above photo and click on “install”.

Check online if SSL is installed

 Now, run a SSL test on your website URL from sslchecker and whynopadlock website. If it shows no error, then SSL certificate is installed correctly by you, congratulations!

How to force-redirect wordpress website from HTTP to HTTPS automatically

Once you have installed your SSL certificate, you will need to redirect all traffic from HTTP to HTTPS to make sure it passes through SSL certificate. There are few ways to do it: 

  1. Edit .htaccess file in your hosting server
    In order to do this, you need to open file manager of your hosting. It will work if your website is created on cPanel hosting like HTML website or wordpress or Drupal or any other CMS.

Once you have opened file manager, you will see files of your website. They will be same like you have files in your computer drive. 
You need to find public_html(1)  folder as shown in below image from left side and then you need to click on Settings(2)  at top right side and make sure you have checked the “Show Hidden Files (dotfiles)” option. Now, you need to find .htaccess(4)  file here as shown in image below. If you are not able to find it, click on create file(3) from top left side to create it. Make sure to use dot before htaccess file while creating it.

Once you have opened .htaccess file, you will need to paste below code over there to redirect website to https.

Now, this code is for my website webride.net, make sure you replace webride.net with your domain name. Once you are done, save changes and refresh your website. Website will start loading with SSL certificate.

In case SSL is not working, it means SSL certificate is not installed or it is not correctly installed.  you can test SSL certificate on SSL checker or why no padlock and troubleshoot accordingly by contacting SSL provider. 

2. “Really simple SSL plugin” 

You can download this plugin and activate it and it will work same way like what above steps did.  This option will work for CMS like wordpress.
